One of the best things that can be done for a family is to spend time together. Some families take vacations or organize outings, camping trips, or visits with friends and relatives in order to spend time together and share new experiences.

But there are also plenty of opportunities to spend time together right at home. You’ll find that creating an outdoor game area in your backyard is a great way to encourage family members of all ages to gather and play. That’s why I’m including some fun backyard sports for families here.

Frisbee golf

This classic lawn game has been around since the 1970s, but it’s experiencing a real resurgence in popularity. If you’ve never played, then you’re in for a treat. Basically, the object of  Frisbee golf is to throw your Frisbees into baskets that are strategically placed around an open area.

Much like regular golf, you’ll be tasked with hitting the Frisbee into certain points on the course or achieving specific goals.

Line up your shot and use the same type of throwing motion that you would for a Frisbee throw. Although, if you want to make game play more challenging, keep in mind that there are limits to how far away you may stand while throwing the Frisbee into the basket.

If you set up your Frisbee golf course in the backyard, then you’ll be able to enjoy hours of family fun.

Tetherball  

There’s nothing like getting the blood pumping through some fast-paced competition. A good game of tetherball is just what you need for a little healthy competition on the weekends.

Just set up the pole and the ball, select your players, and you’re ready to go. 

Tetherball is a game that will challenge your family’s stamina and athletic ability because of how fast-paced it is. It’s also just plain fun.

If you want some friendly competition, tetherball is the game to play.

Badminton  

If you want a game that’s clean, fun, and easy to understand, then badminton is the way to go. Familiarize yourself with the equipment before getting started.

You’ll need a net for this lawn sport as well as rackets and shuttlecocks.

Be sure you have all of these before attempting to play so that you don’t waste any time.

Once you have everything, then it’s just a matter of deciding on a badminton court layout and choosing your teammates. It’s a great way to spend the day with family members who enjoy being active.

Golf  

Golf is another favorite among families. (For one thing, it’s a sport that the whole family can enjoy together.)

What you’ll need for this lawn game is either a regular golf course or a simple tee and pin setup.

You’ll find plenty of options online if you’re interested in setting up your own backyard tee and pin golf course.

Just remember that you need enough outside space to be able to accommodate a golf game. You may also want to consider investing in golfing equipment if you don’t currently own any.

Capture the flag  

Although this is technically an outdoor sport, it’s still worth adding to your list of backyard games for families because of how much fun it is.

Basically, you divide your family members into two teams and give each team a flag to protect. The object of the game is to capture the opposing team’s flag by either pulling it down or touching it — depending on the rules that you set when playing this lawn game. After one team captures the other’s flag, the game ends.

Another fun backyard game for families that’s worth playing when you’re looking to spend time together outside is soccer. Whether you decide to simply play a match or set up your own informal tournament, your family members are guaranteed to have a blast kicking around the ball in the yard.
