Dog Owner Buys $6 Million Super Bowl Ad For Vet School That Saved Pet
Every dog owner likes to splurge on a special treat for their pet from time to time. Maybe you’ll buy them one of those high-end toys that are advertised as “impossible to destroy” but wind up as a pile of slobber-drenched trash in no time flat. Or maybe you drop $6 million on a Super Bowl ad featuring your pooch. Either way, the whole thing is going to be over in 30 seconds.
Super Bowl LIV viewers can look forward to an ad spot featuring Scout, a golden retriever who’s had a hell of a year. As reported by CNN, Scout was given a bleak prognosis last year after a checkup found a tumor on his heart and cancer in his blood vessel walls. Vets estimated that he had a 1% chance of survival.
Luckily, the seven year old pup is owned by David MacNeil, the CEO of WeatherTech, a car accessory manufacturing company. MacNeil doubled down on Scout’s survival and took him to the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. There, scout has been receiving expert care, undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and as a result, his tumor is now almost entirely gone.

Understandably elated, McNeil decided to show his appreciation for the university by purchasing $6 million worth of ad time during this year’s Super Bowl. The commercial, which marks Scout’s second appearance in a big game ad after a WeatherTech ad aired last year, showcases the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, featuring a link at the end where viewers can donate to the facility.
In an interview with Madison, Wisconsin’s WMTV, the school’s dean Mark Markell expressed a funky bunch of appreciation for the gesture, saying “So much of what’s known globally today about how best to diagnose and treat devastating diseases such as cancer originated in veterinary medicine. We’re thrilled to share with Super Bowl viewers how our profession benefits beloved animals like Scout and helps people, too.”
