Films That Completely Destroyed Our Favorite Celebrity Relationships

Hollywood marriages always seem to have an expiration date. Even the most seemingly stable relationships can find themselves facing ugly truths in the wake of an especially passionate on-screen pairing…

Long hours on set and tight on-set friendships can lead to flirtings, which lead to infidelities that often lead to a split. Here are movies that have been known for causing the downfall of some of our favorite Hollywood relationships…

Cleopatra

When Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were put on the set of “Cleopatra” together in 1961, they hated each other. To her, he was brutish and dull; to him, she was a diva. When the time came for their first on-screen kiss, all of their hatred was suddenly forgotten. The director called cut numerous times, but the actors couldn’t stop kissing.

The only problem? They were both married at the time. When word of their infamous kiss got out, their marriages ended. The two eventually divorced their respective partners and married each other, divorced and then re-married!

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

One of the most infamous Hollywood affairs developed during the production of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Although Jennifer Aniston cited “irreconcilable differences” in her divorce, Pitt admitted to falling in love while shooting the movie with Angelina Jolie. All the rumors of the on-set production seemed to be true.

Jolie also spoke of the sparks that flew with the two were filming, despite her hesitance to pursue a married man. They both felt something happening between them, and one month after Aniston filed for divorce, Pitt and Jolie were spotted vacationing in Africa. And just like that, we had Brangelina!

To Have And Have Not

Before becoming one of the most famous couples in Hollywood history, Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart were just friends. The kind of friends who would hold hands and kiss on set. Despite the 25 year age difference, the cast and crew started noticing flirtation sparking between 19-year-old Bacall and 44-year-old Bogart.

The only catch was, Bogart was married to actress Mayo Methot, who was upset to hear about the actors’ flirtation. The two divorced soon after the film was released. Bogart and Bacall married, and the couple stayed together until he died in 1957. Age ain’t nothing but a number!

The Outlaw Josey Wales

Clint Eastwood is known for being a lady’s man, but his most notorious fling was on the set of “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” Though he was married to Maggie Johnson at the time, Eastwood began an indiscreet affair with his co-star Sondra Locke.

Alamy Stock Photo

The affair eventually led to the two moving in together, but much like Eastwood’s past extramarital flirtations, failed. The fling lead to his divorce from Maggie Johnson, which is unsurprising, to say the least!

Days Of Thunder

When “Days of Thunder” began filming in late 1989, Tom Cruise was already in trouble with then-wife Mimi Rogers due to his previous philandering. His on-set whirlwind romance with Nicole Kidman turned out to be the last straw, and Cruise and Rogers divorced just one month into production.

Cruise and Kidman tied the knot on Christmas Eve less than a year later. Their love affair was a rollercoaster, and a few years later, they announced their separation.

By The Sea

All good things must come to an end, and Brangelina’s end was a tough one. “By the Sea,” which tells a story of a disintegration of a marriage, was a “test” of her own marriage to Brad, Jolie confirmed. As it turns out, the movie felt more like a documentary than it did a film.

Alamy Stock Photo

Rumors about Jolie’s “dark side” were spread during filming, and Jolie herself admitted that she butted heads with her husband on set. One year after the movie’s release, the couple separated, and Jolie filed for divorce.

The Misfits

Playwright Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe had been married for four years when decided to collaborate professionally on the set of “The Misfits.” It seemed like a match made in heaven, but the movie’s pressures proved to be too much for the doomed couple.

Alamy Stock Photo

Miller annoyed Monroe with his constant scrip rewrites and obtrusive sexism. Monroe claimed that the movie’s most interesting roles had gone to her male counterparts. It wasn’t long before the couple parted ways. “The Misfits” turned out to be the last movie that Marilyn Monroe filmed before her death.

Daredevil

When Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck started filming “Daredevil” in 2002, they were both in loving relationships. Affleck was a part of the power couple that we know as Bennifer (with Jennifer Lopez), and Garner was married to Scott Foley.

Alamy Stock Photo

Though no one ever admitted to anything happening on-set, Affleck eventually confirmed that he and Jennifer (Garner) fell in love while filming. A year after the superhero flick premiered in 2003, Affleck ended things with Lopez, and unsurprisingly, Garner divorced Foley.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Kenneth Branagh had been married to Emma Thompson for five years before the production of “Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein” started, but little did they know that the film would change everything. The director and star of the film. Branagh couldn’t deny his fascination with co-star Helena Bonham Carter.

Thompson filed for divorce not long after the news broke of Bonham Carter and Branagh’s betrayal. Interestingly enough, Helena and Emma made peace and have no hard feelings. Kenneth and Emma, on the other hand…

Green Lantern

Though Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively insist on being coy about when exactly they fell in love, all signs point to “Green Lantern.” The couple, who have three children together and are the epitome of what we call “couple goals,” were first pointed out, getting cozy in New York City during filming.

Alamy Stock Photo

Though they called it a “friendship,” something about their connection seemed to end their own relationships at the time. Shortly after production ended, Blake broke up with boyfriend and “Gossip Girl” co-star Penn Badgley, and Scarlett Johannson divorced Ryan.

Dream House

Rachel Weisz had been with director Darren Aronofsky for nearly ten years when she entered the production of “Dream House” with Daniel Craig. Craig was engaged at the time, but their connection seemed indisputable.

Both actors claim that working on “Dream House” together was the reason their respective relationships ended, but Rachel has opened up about where her relationship went south before meeting Craig. After ending both their relationships and filming, the couple went public, married a short seven months later, and have been together ever since!

Stage Beauty

Billy Crudup and Mary Louise Parker were never married, but the couple had been partners for eight years before a certain someone came between them. Parker was also seven months pregnant when Crudup left her for his “Stage Beauty” co-star Claire Dances in 2005.

Alamy Stock Photo

Both Parker and Danes have shared their sides of the story. Parker has opened up about her devastation in her 2015 memoir, “Dear. Mr. You.” While Danes doesn’t deny her part in the affair,  “I was just in love with Crudup and needed to explore that, and I was 24… I didn’t quite know what those consequences would be.

House Of Wax

Teenage jaws dropped and hearts shattered when Nick Carter went on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show and declared that his then-girlfriend Paris Hilton had hooked up with Chad Michael Murray while filming “House of Wax.” If that wasn’t scandalous enough, Murray and “One Tree Hill” co-star Sophia Bush were married at the time.

Bush and Murray were everyone’s dream couple, but after the news broke, they quickly separated and divorced. Years later, Bush explained that her divorce from Murray had nothing to with his and Paris’s affair and that they were just two stupid kids who had no business getting into a relationship in the first place.

Northern Lights

Who would have thought that a Lifetime movie would end of two marriages? During the filming of the film, “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Brandi Glanville’s ex-husband, Eddie Cibrian, cheated on her with LeAnn Rimes.

Shortly after news of the “Northern Lights” actors hooking up during production, the two divorced their respective partners. It wasn’t all for nothing either as Rimes and Cibrian tied the knot in 2011.

Titanic

“Titanic” director James Cameron and actress Linda Hamilton, were not even married for a full year before the director fell for actress Suzy Amis. Cameron and Hamilton managed to stay together for two years, though Hamilton explained אhat she had a hard time reconciling the broken relationship.

Because of “Titanic’s” enormous success, every award Cameron would win broke Hamilton’s heart a little more. Though their love was strong, the couple couldn’t make it work, and shortly after their divorce, James married Amis.

Proof of Life

While on set for the thriller “Proof of Life,” Meg Ryan and Russel Crowe were caught snuggling up to one another, which led up to the end of Ryan’s marriage to Dennis Quaid. They filed for joint custody of their eight-year-old son, Jack, and went their separate ways.

Years later, Jack opened up about his parent’s divorce, “It’s kind of hard to ignore when you’re at a grocery store, and you’re like, checking out and those magazines on the side [feature] a photo of [Ryan and Quaid] with a little paper rip thing.” As you may have already guessed, Ryan and Crowe’s affair was short-lived.

Mind Over Murder

Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling have been married for more than fifteen years, and have five children together. They were both married to other people when they first met.

The couple met on the set of Lifetime’s “Mind Over Murder,” and less than a year later, they eloped in Fiji. They have been inseparable since the day they met, and have never looked back. When it’s a match made in heaven, there is no reason to look back, is there?

Silence

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone’s relationship was simply too good to be true. But what goes up must come down, and Stone and Garfield came down hard. Garfield’s intense dedication to his character in “Silence” is what led to the ultimate demise.

Movie Stills

Garfield was eager to give his performance his all, losing a lot of weight and embracing his character completely. The split seemed to be an amicable one, and the two actors are friendly to this day. It looks like their romance just wasn’t meant to be, and though they’ve moved on, we’re still torn up about it.

Mother!

Mixing work and pleasure is risky business, especially when you’re working with Darren Aronofsky. Jennifer Lawrence, the star of his film, “mother!” and the director entered a relationship, and the couple made it work for more than a year.

Movie Stills

It wasn’t filming the film that ended their relationship – it was Aronofsky’s obsession with the reception the film received. He was obsessed with what the critics had to say about the film, so much so that it drove a wedge between him and the “mother!”‘ actress. One they couldn’t work through…

Gigli

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez had a bizarre relationship. No one understood their chemistry, but somehow the two found love with each other. Their romance started on the set of “Gigli,” which has been regarded as one of the worst movies ever made.

Movie Stills

JLo left her husband, Cris Judd, for Affleck – and though their relationship was not one that lasted (thanks to another movie on this list), Bennifer will forever hold a place in our hearts.

Pushing Tin

On the set of “Pushing Tin,” in 1999, Angie and Billy Bob Thornton met, which would have been fine, had Thornton not been engaged to Laura Dern at the time.

Movie Stills

A relationship developed between the actors, and Thornton ended his relationship with Dern. Angie and Billy Bob ended up getting married, and their relationship was the talk of the town. The couple started wearing bottles with each other’s blood! In the long run, it seems like Laura lucked out!

Dangerous Liaisons

“Dangerous Liaisons” is famous for a plethora of reasons – one of them being the fact that it ended the six-year marriage of John Malkovich and Glenne Headley. The courtship came to an end because Malkovich began an affair with co-star Michelle Pfieffer.

Movie Stills

Perhaps all the intimate moments on-screen wore off on the actors, and they found themselves in character off-screen as well. Though the affair managed to end a marriage, it didn’t last very long, and both Malkovich and Pfieffer moved on pretty quickly.

Bad Teacher

No one remembers that Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz were a couple, but lo and behold, they were. “Bad Teacher” was the last straw in their relationship. Though no one is sure as to when exactly the relationship ended, it had something to do with production.

Movie Stills

Some reports suggest the relationship crumbled even before production even happened, while others say it happened as the movie was filming. Whatever the case may be, by the time they were done filming, the couple had broken up!

Eyes Wide Shut

“Eyes Wide Shut” seems to chronicle the end of the relationship between Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. The movie is about the jealousy that infects a couple played by Tom and Nicole, but it’s hard to ignore the real-life similarities that we witness in the film.

Movie Stills

Though their marriage didn’t end right after the film, it was easy to see that the movie represented a pivotal moment in their relationship. It seems like “Eyes Wide Shut” opened up a pandora’s box for the two, there’s no coming back from a film about jealousy and temptation.

Snow White and the Huntsman

There was one point in history when Bella and Edward were everyone’s favorite couple, even if they were fictional characters. “Twilight” fans went wild when actors Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson set the world on fire with their off-screen relationship.

Movie Stills

Director Rupert Sanders managed to pull together an all-star cast for “Snow White and the Huntsman,” but there was one actress he couldn’t keep his eyes (or hands) off of. Stewart and Sanders had an affair, which led to the break up of Pattinson and Stewart amidst the rumors.

The Rum Diary

Johnny Depp and French singer Vanessa Paradis were together for 14 years, which is something to admire when it comes to Hollywood romances. It seemed like they were going to beat the odds when, on the set of “The Rum Diary,” Depp met Amber Heard, who was cast as none other than his love interest.

Movie Stills

Their on-screen relationship turned into the real thing, which in turn, ruined Depp’s relationship with Paradis. Hear and Depp married, but things escalated quickly, and the two entered an explosive divorce in 2017.

The Last Face

Though it had a star-studded cast, no one seemed to like Sean Penn’s “The Last Face.” It even got a 4% on Rotten Tomatoes! But that wasn’t the worst tragedy to come from the film. It managed to ruin Theron and Penn’s relationship. The happy couple got engaged in 2014, the same year production on the movie started.

Movie Stills

As they proceeded in the film’s production, things seemed to be less than perfect. The couple’s disputes happened so often that a year after the shooting had wrapped, they ended up breaking up.

Gone Girl

Ben Affleck is all over the place, he can’t seem to get his act together, and it costs him his relationships. While he was still married to Jennifer Garner, he landed the lead role in David Fincher’s “Gone Girl.”

Movie Stills

Allegedly, Affleck got too close to one of his co-stars; he asked for Emily Ratajkowski to play a focal role in the film. Affleck and Ratajkowski had some intimate moments during production, which led to Garner filing for divorce in 2017.

The Break-Up

After her high-profile divorce from Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston took on a role in a dramedy about a couple that breaks up. Sounds therapeutic, doesn’t it? Her co-star was Vince Vaughn, and it didn’t take long before the two actors started dating.

Alamy Stock Photo

Nevertheless, the relationship wound up being a short rebound, and they broke up as quickly as they got together.

Rosemary’s Baby

What happens when making a movie costs you your marriage to one of the greatest musicians of all time? Mia Farrow knows the answer to this all too well. The actress was determined to film “Rosemary’s Baby,” no matter how her then-husband, Frank Sinatra, felt.

Movie Stills

In her autobiography, “What Falls Away,” Farrow wrote that filming the flick was hard and that Sinatra wanted her to leave the movie – he felt that the lengthy shooting schedule was getting in the way of their relationship. Mia refused, which led to Sinatra handing her divorce papers on set!

Nymphomaniac

Based on the title alone, you can likely guess what “Nymphomaniac” is about. The “adults only” vibe of the film seemed to affect star Shia LaBeouf, who ended his long term relationship with Karolyn Pho for an on-set tryst.

Movie Stills

Mia Goth made her film debut on the film, and she and LaBeouf have some pretty heated on-screen moments. The actors decided to take their chances on an off-screen romance, and they began dating while filming. It turns out, it was worth the risk, and the two got married in 2016. The couple divorced in 2018.

Layer Cake

What starts as a scandal, may very well end as a scandal. Back in 2005, Jude Law cheated on his fiance, Sienna Miller, with their nanny. A year earlier, Miller cheated on her fiance Law with ‘”Layer Cake” co-star, Daniel Craig.

Movie Stills

Both of these infidelities would be the death of this pending marriage, and in 2009, they managed to rekindle their relationship. Sadly, in 2011, they broke up again.

Planet of the Apes

Lisa Marie and Tim Burton may have been one of Hollywood’s weirdest couples, but that was before Burton met Helena Bonham Carter. During the remake of “Planet of the Apes,” in 2001, Burton cast both Marie and Helena Bonham Carter, and that’s when things got complicated.

Movie Stills

Helena played Ari, a rebellious ape who falls in love with a human. Burton fell in love with Carter, ending his relationship with Marie to pursue a relationship with her. Carter and Burton entered a long professional and romantic relationship and were together for nearly fifteen years, before ending things in 2014.

Stop-Loss

For nearly ten years, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe were Hollywood’s most beautiful young couple. The rising stars got married and co-starred in the cult classic “Cruel Intentions.” They had two kids and a seemingly beautiful marriage until eight years later when things came crumbling down…

Movie Stills

The culprit? Co-star, Abbie Cornish. The two met on the set of “Stop-Loss,” a drama surrounding a recent veteran who has PTSD. The two had an immediate connection on set, which led to Witherspoon and Phillippe’s divorce.

Honey Boy

When Shia LaBeouf wrote the script for “Honey Boy,” we’re sure he never imagined it would ruin his marriage. The drama based on his childhood and his complicated relationship with his father, the actor plays the character based on his father. FKA Twigs performs Shy Girl, a love interest for the character based on LaBeouf.

Movie Stills

While on set, LaBeouf and FKA Twigs found interest in each other, and LaBeouf ended his two-year marriage to Mia Goth. Though they never officially announced their relationship, the two have been spotted together many times.

Descendants 2

Disney Channel sweethearts Ryan McCartan and Dove Cameron were happily engaged until Cameron suddenly ended their relationship. It was a few weeks after “Descendants 2” finished filming, so all fingers point to the fact that something fishy happened on set.

Movie Stills

That’s when Cameron confirmed she was dating her “Descendents 2” co-star Thomas Doherty. This is a not so happily ever after ending for these young Disney Stars.

You, Me and Dupree

When Kate Hudson was cast to star in the comedy, “You, Me, and Dupree,” she had been married to Chris Robinson for more quite some time. Sadly, their marriage face issue when the actress grew closer and closer to her co-star, Owen Wilson.

Movie Stills

Hudson allegedly ended her marriage for the actor, which may not have been the smartest idea seeing as the actors’ relationship was short-lived…

Woman of the Year

Unlike almost all the relationships on this list, Spencer and Louise didn’t split up because of a film. They did, however, face a relationship altering affair on the set of “Woman of the Year.” Spencer appeared in the movie with Katharine Hepburn, and from that moment on, his relationship with Louise was never the same.

Movie Stills

The actor engaged in an affair with Hepburn that lasted for decades. Though the passion between Spencer and Katharine was undeniable, Louise didn’t let that end her marriage, and the two stayed together until she passed in 1983.

The Getaway

Ali MacGraw and Robert Evans were only a few years into their marriage when things took an unfortunate turn. The actress was cast in the thriller, “The Getaway,” where she connected with her heartthrob co-star Steve McQueen.

Moviestillsdb

It was common knowledge that the actor was known for enjoying the company of women, and his charm managed to work on Ali as well. She parted ways with Evans in 1972 and married McQueen a year later, although the relationship ended five years later.

Made In America

It’s rare to see high school sweethearts make it in Hollywood; it’s rare to see any couple make it in Hollywood for that matter. Ted Danson and Cassandra Coates were each other’s sweethearts for more than a decade – they thought they were going to beat the odds.

Movie Stills

Unfortunately, their devotion wasn’t destined to last, and it came to an end when Danson appeared in “Made in America.” Danson and Whoopi Goldberg’s chemistry on set was inevitable and came at the expense of Ted and Cassandra’s marriage.

The Last Picture Show

Peter Bogdanovich was sure he had devoted his life to his wife of nearly a decade, Polly Platt. That was until he met Cybill Shepherd. The director cast Shepherd in his drama, “The Last Picture Show,” and sparks flew between the two.

Movie Stills

He decided to leave his wife for Shepherd, and the two were in what most would call a successful Hollywood relationship. They eventually called it quits in 1978.

Star Wars

Being cast as Han Solo in “Star Wars” changed Harrison Ford’s life forever. While filming, he and Carrie Fisher began an affair. Though rumors of the actors’ off-screen chemistry had been the talk of the town for years, it was only confirmed years later in Fisher’s book, “The Princess Diarist.”

Movie Stills

Harrison would never admit that his infidelity would be what need his marriage to Mary Marquardt.

Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll

Marilyn Manson and Evan Rachel Wood’s relationship is by far the weirdest celebrity relationship of all time. The couple met on the set of Manson’s horror film, “Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carrol.” At the time, Manson was married Dita Von Teese, who filed for divorce following his betrayal.

Manson and Wood had a tumultuous relationship, got engaged, and then called it quits for the last time in 2011. Years later, Manson described his involvement as a mistake, explaining, “I don’t trust girls who have three names.”

Planet Terror

Rose McGowan and director Robert Rodriguez always had a stormy relationship. It began on the set of the movie “Planet Terror,” while Rodriguez was still married but also committed to producer Elizabeth Avellán.

Movie Stills

His marriage hit the rocks as his affair with the actress began. Their relationship was turbulent, and they struggled to stay together – fortunately, the couple called it quits.

The Godfather

While on the set of “The Godfather,” Al Pacino and Diane Keaton fell madly in love. The couple was romantically involved in an on-again, off-again relationship during the ’70s and ’80s. Keaton wanted to settle down with the actor, but he wasn’t ready yet.

Movie Stills

They continued to find a way to work side-by-side though their relationship wasn’t picture-perfect, which was a true testament to their professionalism and dedication as actors. After filming “The Godfather Part III,” they parted ways for the last time.

He’s Just Not That Into You

Drew Barrymore and Justin Long first met when working on the set of “He’s Just Not That Into You.” The two hit it off and dated during the filming, but couldn’t seem to manage their off-screen relationship and broke up shortly after.

Movie Stills

That’s when fate (or Hollywood) brought them together again on the set of “Going the Distance,” in 2009. The couple didn’t last for long, and they broke up within months. When it’s not meant to be, it’s just not intended to be, huh?

The O.C.

This TV couple is one for the books! Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson first met when filming the show, “The O.C.” when they were both starting their careers as actors. Their on-screen chemistry translated beautifully into an off-screen relationship.

Movie Stills

Sadly, though their on-screen relationship ended in marriage, their real-life relationship ended a bit differently. They managed to remain on good terms, proving complicated breakups aren’t always the answer, especially when you’re working with your ex.

Gifted

Jenny Slate and Chris Evans met on the set of “Gifted” in 2015. Slate was married to Dean Fleischer-Camp at the time, but there was something about Slate and Evan’s chemistry on-set that made them both curious to find out what it could mean off-set.

Movie Stills

They became a couple, but by the time the movie premiered in 2017, they had already broken up. Though they knew they weren’t mean to be, they gave it another shot but broke up once again in 2018.

Heroes

Another TV romance, Hayden Panetierre, and Milo Ventimiglia met on the set of “Heroes,” but it may have been “Heroes” that broke them up as well. When the two got together, they raised eyebrows due to their 12-year age difference. The couple managed to stay together for two years until the public eye until they broke up in 2009.

Movie Stills

They continued working together until the show ended, and the main speculation for their breakup was the fact that Hayden portrayed Ventimiglia’s niece on the show, making the dynamic between them a little too eerie.
