It is not surprising that the capital city of Austria is a magnificent beauty. Full of history, culture and art, Vienna is home to some of Europe’s most intellectual districts.  Located on the Danube River, the city truly looks like something straight out of a fairytale.

Quebec City is a city that makes you feel like you’re in Europe. The charming little village of Tadoussac, the Viex Quebec’s historic cobblestone streets and the astounding Montmorency Falls are some of the city’s unique gems.

The Canadian city also has a majestic castle called Le Château Frontenac, which is definitely the best place to stay at when visiting Quebec City.

You may have only heard about this city through the popular series “Game of Thrones”, but Dubrovnik is worth a visit for far more than just that reason. Located in the southern part of Croatia, Duborvnik’s white buildings covered in terracotta roofs make this city an architectural gem.

The beautiful architecture faces the bright blue Adriatic Sea, which is a lovely resting spot after a long day of walking around the city. If you watched the famous animated movie “Frozen”, this beautiful Norwegian city will look a little familiar. Bergen is a small, picturesque city on Norway’s southwestern coast; its small and friendly population of less than 300,000 people, its majestic fjords, and the sweet wooden houses make it a very special place to visit.

The city’s wharf of Bryggen was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is a definite must-see for any tourists. If you’re in the mood for a once-in-a-lifetime sunset view, hike to the top of the Fløyen Mountain.

Italy’s capital simply had to be on this list. Rome has countless sites to get lost in, not to mention an incredibly rich history. As one of the world’s most famous ancient cities, Rome is home to the legendary Coliseum and the Trevi Fountain.

Russia has a fascinating history, and the city of St. Petersburg holds a lot of it. Bordering with the Baltic Sea, this port city is the home of centuries old historic buildings and culture. Not to mention its stunning, incredibly detailed and ornate architecture.

Go see some of St. Petersburg’s best works of art at the Hermitage Museum, the Mariinsky Theater and the State Russian Museum. Also, don’t forget to visit Peterhof Palace, Catherine Palace, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood.

The capital of Spain is very majestic, and certainly offers something for every type of traveler. The beautiful gardens of El Retiro park, the wide boulevards in Gran Via street, or the amazing art work at the El Prado Museum are enough to make this city worth visiting.

The brightly-colored architecture from colonial-era Spain, the famous restaurants where Ernest Hemingway ate and drank countless mojitos, and the enchanting cobblestone streets are just a tiny part of what makes Havana an unforgettable city.

The capital of Cuba, Havana has seen its fair share of history, and what were once majestic palaces are now museums. It has one of the largest opera houses in the world, offers some of the best culinary experiences you will ever have, and seems to have music within its walls. Visit the white, sandy beaches of Playas del Este beach, complete with tall palm trees and hypnotizing ocean breezes.

Comprised of five different boroughs, New York City is a very densely populated place. The city sits at the meeting point of the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean, me of its most iconic sites are the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, the Rockeffeler Center, Broadway, the MOMA, the Met, the Lincoln Center, and of course, Greenwich Village.

If you’re a lover of literature, Edinburgh is the place for you. The capital of Scotland is rich in history and has produced some of the world’s most incredible writers, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Muriel Spark and J.K. Rowling.

The small city of Edinburgh has many sites to see, among them Arthur’s Seat, the famous Edinburgh Castle, and the spookiest graveyard in the world, Greyfriars Kirkyard. The locals lovingly refer to Scotland as Auld Reekie (Old Smoky in Scots), because back in coal-burning days, people that lived in the countryside always saw a cloud of smoke over the city from afar.

Zurich is a world-famous economic center, complete with beautiful architecture, colorful streets and gorgeous nature. The city sits on Lake Zurich, in northern Switzerland. Singapore is also known for its incredible street food, which has won many culinary awards. For more fussy travelers, it also offers countless luxury restaurants with fine dining experiences.

Although Latvia might not exactly be a popular tourist destination, it really should be. Its capital city, Riga, has a a historical center so impressive that it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Riga has the world’s largest collection of Art Nouveau architecture, making this city a very colorful place to walk around in. For shopping lovers, the place is a paradise, since Riga is known for its stores’ particularly low prices.

Also known as George Town, this city is made up of Penang Island and a number of other smaller islands. The thing that makes the City of Penang Island special is the mix of Asian and colonial architecture. Be sure to visit the City Hall, St. George’s Church, the High Court and Fort Cornwallis.

An interesting historic fact is that, before Malaysia got its independence from the British, George Town was declared a city by Queen Elizabeth II. That makes it the first city in Malaysia’s modern history.

This huge city in China is home to over 20 million people, and it is as rich in historical sites as it is in modern attractions. It’s not possible to see everything in one trip, or in ten, for that matter. But there are a few unmissable spots to visit first.

Located on the Bosphorus Strait, between Europe and Asia, the city of Istanbul is one of the best and most beautiful cities in Turkey. Located on the Baltic Sea, Tallinn is Estonia’s capital city, and although it is often overlooked, it has a lot to offer tourists. Tallinn has a rich history, and its beautiful Old Town is definitely worth a visit.

Along with its beautiful scenery and architecture, there are a variety of markets to explore that reflect the local, Omani heritage as well as the locals themselves, who will give you a taste of Middle Eastern hospitality. In the end, you’ll most appreciate Oman for being far less commercialized (and even Westernized) than Dubai.

If you are looking for a place that truly captures the quiet rest of the countryside, Derbyshire, England should be your next destination.  This region of the English countryside is lush and green and is also home to the beautiful Peak District.

The Peak District is a National Park that is known for its incredible valleys, moors, rivers, and wildlife. Derbyshire is the perfect place for those looking to find solace in nature or to step inside the pages of their favorite Jane Austen novel.

Located in Western Scotland, Glencoe represents the heart of the majestic, Scottish highlands. Movie fans may recognize the brooding scenery from films like “Skyfall” and “Harry Potter.”

Glencoe allows you to see Scotland in its rugged, unpolished beauty with its hiking trails and there are a handful of accommodations in the area. But, if you really want to up your adventure, there are also designated camping spots for those who want to be closer to nature.

People often associate islands with warmer climates, but northern countries can have them too.  Depending on what time of year it is, these islands located in northern, Norway, can look like tropical islands at first glance.

With its abundance of beaches, exotic flowers, and beautiful weather, Hawaii had to be on this list. Kailua, Hawaii is known for, well, being rather unknown. This beautiful island is not as crowded as the larger, more commercialized ones like Oahu or Kauai.

Enjoy a little more solitude as you explore Kailua’s beaches, hiking trails, and local shops. If you want to see more outside of this island, you can kayak over to the Mokuleia islands (known as “the Mokes”) for a fresh perspective.

It may look like a scene from another planet but Meteora, Greece is just the place to rediscover the surprises of the Mediterannean. Located in central Greece, Meteora (which means “suspended in air”) is full of lush green slopes and elevated monasteries. Meteora was established by monks who lived in this region during the 11th century.

Along with seeing the monasteries, hiking, and viewing captivating sunsets, you can stay in the nearby town, Kalambaka, which will meet your tourist needs of trying local food, shopping, and lodging.

Swakopmund is a coastal town in the African country of Namibia. Visitors will notice a German influence as the area was colonized in 1892 by German, South West Africa.

This unique city has plenty of coastlines to take in as well as an aquarium and a museum if you want to learn more about local history. If Namibia is on your list, you need to check out Swakopmund.

For those who are looking for another Croatian destination, Split is a lovely alternative. This coastal city (which is also the country’s capital) is home to beautiful beaches, islands, and fresh seafood.

In Split, you can also check out the ancient, Roman palace of Emperor Diocletian and the rich, ancient history surrounding the area. And, if you want to get out of town, you can hike in the Marjan Forest Park, located at the top of Split. There is so much to see in the stunning, baltic city.

Alaska may not hold the same vacation appeal as some warmer spots, but that’s because this place has an appeal all its own. In Anchorage, you can adventure into the Chugach mountains as well as discover the history of native Alaskans.

There is also a rich pioneer and mining history in Anchorage for tourists to find but if you want more nature outings, you can also go kayaking, canoeing or cycling along the coastal trail. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife!

The Maldives is a top honeymoon spot but this beautiful place isn’t just for newlyweds. Male is the capital of the Maldives and is the largest city here. Male is also an Islamic city so you will want to make sure to dress more modestly when you are not relaxing by the pool.

Aside from gazing at the incredible water here, you can get a taste of the local culture by checking out the local fish market, art gallery, and museum.

Exotic, mysterious, and filled to the brim with ancient history, Egypt holds much intrigue for its visitors. Alexandria, the second-largest city in Egypt, houses the great lighthouse, one of the wonders of the world. Another site not to miss is the Bibliotheca Alexandria (or the modern version of the Library of Alexandria).

If you want even more of a historical immersion you can visit the Royal Jewelry Museum, Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, and the Roman Amphitheatre. Among the other places to explore in Alexandria, you can take a break from ancient history and walk in the beautiful gardens of Montazah Park.

In Mudgee, Australia, you will find an adventure apart from the red sand outback. Mudgee has a number of guesthouses where tourists can relax in the Australian countryside.

Additionally, Mudgee has a handful of wineries where you can taste the regional wines and if you want to see more of the area, you can visit the Blue Mountains or a waterfront getaway called The Basin.

At first, it may look like a tropical island but St. Ives is actually located in Cornwall, England.  In this scenic, coastal town you can catch some waves at Porthmeor Beach after some lessons from the St. Ives Surf School.

You can also visit the local shops, restaurants, and bars in the surrounding charming town. And, if you want a unique place to stay, you can book a few nights at the Treehouse on the Lake, a quaint house located 20 feet above the forest floor.

Another beautiful location in the Middle East, Amman, Jordan is well worth a visit. This city is rich in culture and fascinating sites to visit. Just in this city, you can visit the Temple of Hercules at the Amman Citadel, which dates back to Roman times as well as the Byzantine Basilica and Umayyad Palace among other historical sites.

To really immerse yourself in the local culture, you can walk along Rainbow Street, which really comes to life on Thursday nights as locals begin their weekend. If you’re looking to experience Amman at a more relaxed pace, you can unwind at one of the nearby spas near the Dead Sea.

You may have never heard of Puerto de la Cruz, but you will want to add this beautiful city to your travel list. Located on Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, Puerto de la Cruz is a tantalizing escape for those who are thirsting for island life.

While you are in Puerto de la Cruz, you will find a variety of restaurants as well as an outdoor market, all the while taking in incredible island views. The city is known for its beaches and nightlife but if you are craving milder diversions, you can also visit the nearby zoo (Loro Parque) or the botanical gardens.

Like Dubai, Doha holds a similar futuristic elegance but is slightly lower on the tourism radar. In Doha, you will find the past and the future blended beautifully together.

Notably, you will find many types of cuisine in the city including Qatari, Filipino, American, Chinese, Nepalese, and Mexican food (among others). For a really exotic experience, you can observe the regional pastime of camel racing and falconry. And later, before you leave, you’ll want to stop by one of the tax-free malls to buy some gifts to take back home.

Shoalhaven is located on the Eastern coast of Australia and has activities to suit nearly everyone.  You can surf, hike, dive, go fishing and visit Seven Mile Beach if you prefer the outdoors.

New Zealand is known to have some of the most wildly beautiful landscapes on earth and Dunedin is no exception. Dunedin has a rich Scottish heritage that you will see in sites like the Larnach Castle.

Explore the charming and artsy neighborhood of Port Chalmers and don’t miss the coastal views at Tunnel Beach and at the lighthouse found in Taiaroa Head. The Royal Albatross Centre, found in the same region, also has a wildlife reserve where you can spot one of these unique birds.
