The Movie You Forgot Dave Grohl Starred In

Who would think that being cast as Satan in a movie would let Dave Grohl get to showcase his many talents? On the other hand, if you heard Grohl played Satan in musical-comedy duo Tenacious D’s 2006 movie, “Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny,” alongside Jack Black and Kyle Gass, it might all start to make sense. That’s because all three of those dudes are not only talented rockers but also hella funny and entertaining.

Still, if you’ve seen “Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny” you could be forgiven for not realizing it was Grohl decked out in full-body red paint, with accompanying Satan-like prosthetics. His character was also made to look much larger than Gass’ and Black’s characters — so much so that he was pretty much unrecognizable unless you knew it was him going in. But as Satan, Grohl got to show the world what he’s working with in his climactic scene with Gass and Black when their characters challenge him to a “rock-off” a-la “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

Satan has to accept the challenge due to the “Demon Code” — naturally. That’s when Grohl-as-Satan’s performance reminds everyone that he’s a one-man show — the hard-rocking singer and guitarist from Foo Fighters; that killer drummer we knew from Nirvana; plus, he’s just funny, as illuminated in his playful performance as the prince of darkness.

Grohl prepared for the role by listening to metal and drinking Jägermeister

Grohl came by the part pretty naturally, as he’d already worked with Black and Gass. The duo had been touring their act, Tenacious D, since circa 2000 as live shows, but eventually the comedy-musical act turned real band, complete with recording a couple of records with Grohl on drums and a brief “Tenacious D,” series on HBO, per Rolling Stone.

According to Foo Archive, Grohl’s friend and former bandmate was working at The Viper Room in L.A. where Tenacious D was regularly playing on the weekends. He told Grohl he should come check out the act, Grohl did, and from then on, Grohl, Black, and Gass have been buddies and have done various projects together.

As a testament to their friendship and Grohl’s appreciation for Tenacious D, he told Black in a conversation published on Foo Archive, “I’ve always said that I’d never do a movie and that’s a sacrifice that I’ve made for you time and time again. But I got to play Satan in the Tenacious D movie! That’s like Kurtz in ‘Apocalypse Now!’ You can’t beat that!”

Though, Grohl did say the make-up was brutal — several hours of sitting there as they put it all on. “But it was great because the whole time I sat in the chair and drank Jager and listened to Slayer, Unleashed, Mercyful Fate …, Grohl said. “I just listened to metal for six hours so when it was like, ‘Mr. Grohl, you’re on’ — I was just like the devil!”
