This Is The Best And The Worst Path You Can Choose In Netflix’s Escape The Undertaker
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s “Escape The Undertaker.”
“Escape The Undertaker” debuted on Netflix on October 5, 2021, and the best way to describe it may be as such — what if “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” but with WWE Superstars? Now there isn’t as much footage as there is on “Bandersnatch” and the endings are also fewer, but if you’re a WWE fan, the new choose-your-own-adventure mini-movie should make for a nice way to get ready for Halloween, with a healthy dose of the supernatural delivered by none other than The Undertaker, as well as the wacky hijinks of 11-time WWE tag team champions The New Day, aka Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods.
In the film, The New Day finds themselves trapped in Undertaker’s mansion after they drop by in hopes of borrowing his urn so they can add its power to their “power of positivity” and become unstoppable forces in the ring. When it comes to initial paths, it doesn’t matter whether you follow the whispers, the fog, or the lights — you’ll still end up watching almost the same sequences afterward until you find both halves of the key required to unlock the urn. But that’s where things really start to get dicey, as The Undertaker shows up and informs Big E, Kofi, and Xavier that they need to face their fears now that they’ve laid their hands on the object.
Clearly, the best path in “Escape The Undertaker” involves defeating the Deadman in some fashion. But how do you get there, and what do you need to do to live up to the title of the interactive short film? And what is the worst path you can potentially take after joining The New Day in confronting their fears?
Best path: You'll need one little item to destroy the urn
Much like any good choose-your-own-adventure film should, “Escape The Undertaker” gives you every chance you need to get the other endings — or wrap things up with the perfect ending. The best possible path would first require you to get one item while Big E and Xavier Woods are exploring The Undertaker’s library. That item is a vial filled with a mysterious liquid, and Big E finds himself torn on whether he should grab the vial or leave it alone, given that it might be one of the many traps that ‘Taker has left lying around his mansion.
When choosing which New Day member to follow as they come face-to-face with their respective phobias, you can pick any one of them, but in any event, you should not give in to temptation and accept The Undertaker’s offer to join forces with him in exchange for freedom. Likewise, it won’t matter whether you want BIg E, Xavier, or Kofi Kingston to charge at the Deadman during the final battle — everything will play out almost the exact same way until you’re given the choice to take the urn or destroy it. Choose the latter option and Big E will consume the contents of the “power vial,” giving him the superhuman strength needed to smash the urn and seemingly vanquish The Undertaker.
After The Undertaker disappears, you’ll see The New Day outside his mansion, escaping via a casket and celebrating their victory as they make their way home. You can choose “Face Your Fears” to explore other endings or select “Rest in Peace” to move on to the final scene, where Undertaker can be seen clapping his hands, applauding The New Day (and you, the viewer) for a job well done.
Worst path: Xavier Woods turns heel on Big E and Kofi Kingston
But what if you didn’t get the power vial? Simply put, the urn will survive and so will The Undertaker. Depending on whether you opted to unsuccessfully try to destroy the urn or steal it during the final battle, The New Day will either escape with their lives while ‘Taker still has the evil powers of the urn at his disposal, or they’ll ostensibly escape, but ultimately get consumed by their fears as the Deadman watches their downfall through his security monitor. What’s worse than that, though, is choosing to follow Xavier Woods as he faces his fears, then later having him accept The Undertaker’s offer to join his side.
Kofi Kingston is afraid of being seen as nothing more than a solid hand — or a “B-plus player,” as WWE boss Vince McMahon calls him. Big E is scared of spiders, as shown in a scene reminiscent of Nicolas Cage’s “not the bees!” moment in “The Wicker Man,” albeit without the meme-worthy histrionics. Woods, meanwhile, seems to have claustrophobia, and that manifests while he is being buried alive by The Undertaker. After Woods agrees to betray Kingston and Big E and is freed from the casket, everything plays out as normal until late in the final battle, where his eyes turn purple. He then knocks Kingston out while ‘Taker does the same to Big E, and as they both drag the unconscious New Day members back into the mansion, The Undertaker explains that he now owns Woods’ soul.
It’s bad enough that Kingston and Big E lose their souls after they give in to their fears, but Woods’ pro-wrestling-style heel turn effectively highlights why the above path is the worst you can take in “Escape The Undertaker.”
