Elon Musk Expects ‘Fully Operational’ Las Vegas Tunnel In 2020
If you’re looking for a boring story, you’ve come to the right place. But it’s not you that will be bored — it’s a mile-long tunnel under Las Vegas, brought to you by the good folks from The Boring Company.
This tongue-in-cheek, drill-in-Earth company “initially began as a joke in 2016,” according to CNN. But who would jokingly remark about solving society’s problems with a revolutionary solution and then actually attempt to follow through? If you answered Newt Gingrich, then you are sadly mistaken, and clearly didn’t read the title. The answer is Elon Musk.
Everyone’s favorite tech billionaire playboy is at it again. Between trying to save our species from its inevitable extinction at the hands of robots, launching rockets, debuting Cybertrucks, and magically regrowing his hair, he’s also found time to “bore tunnels underground to alleviate traffic in highly congested cities,” with projects in the works for Los Angeles, Chicago, Baltimore, and of course, Las Vegas.
The Musky scent of a bore hole
A late December 2019 tweet from Musk stated that the Boring Company is completing its drilling of its first commercial tunnel, which will run from the Las Vegas Convention Center to the famed Strip.
Per CNN, Musk and his Boring Company “have been working to revolutionize the way people travel with high-speed Loop and Hyperloop transportation systems. Underground tunnels will transport people in cars or passenger ‘pods,’ allowing commuters to bypass traffic and get around cities faster.
So, the tunnel’s just about done, and now they’ve got to get the tracks and “pods” in, which is expected to allow passengers in autonomous vehicles to travel at speeds up to 155 miles per hour, assuming everything goes smoothly. Pretty cool. Even cooler, he hopes to eventually increase up to speeds of 600 miles per hour. That promises to be anything but boring, presuming he can bore his way through all the red tape.
