Upon investigating the death of Kurt Cobain, authorities found several items. Beside the musician’s body was a cigar box with drugs and paraphernalia. On his wrist was the medical bracelet from the rehab center he left days prior. Cobain left a page-long handwritten note that touched on his feelings toward performing. “It simply isn’t fair to you or me. The worst crime I can think of would be to rip people off by faking it and pretending as if I’m having 100% fun,” he wrote (via ATI). The end of the letter was addressed to his wife and read, “Please keep going Courtney, for Frances. For her life, which will be so much happier without me.”

Cobain’s autopsy revealed that he had died a couple of days before his body was found, and the official date of death was April 5, 1994. The toxicology report stated that Cobain had a high concentration of heroin in his system at the time of his death that measured 1.52 milligrams per liter. The autopsy report also noted old needle tracks on Cobain’s arm, as well new puncture wounds. The official cause of death was listed as a self-inflicted “contact perforating shotgun wound to the head” (via Autopsy Files).
