Well, to be exact, the only time when he did stop was when he taught English in India for a year.

Another Honorary Doctorate of human letters was given to him by Boston University.

Sterling Morrison Had a Ph.D. in Medieval Studies

Rock guitarist Sterling Morrison was one of the founders of American rock band The Velvet Underground. While the glitz and glamour of being a rock legend seem to appeal to many, it seems that Morrison has always had his eyes out for the academy.

When the band broke up after Lou Reed left it for a solo career, Sterling took it as a chance to fulfill his academic dream and enrolled into the University of Texas. His Ph.D. in Medieval Studies was finished not long after that.

Frank Ryan Has a Ph.D. in Mathematics

Another such band was The Offspring, who released songs such as Pretty Fly for a White Guy. However, listening to the band’s music will never have you guessing that its lead singer has a full blown Ph.D.

Dexter Holland is passionate about science as he is about music, and it looks like it has been like that since he was a kid, with a high school rock band and a valedictorian graduation. By 2013, Holland was a doctoral student for molecular biology with a B.A. in Biology and an M.A. in Molecular Biology.

Touring the world with a rock band is a dream shared by many. However, if you asked Tom Sholz about it, there is a chance he would tell you that he would rather be in a library or making meaningful contributions to science. The thing is, when your rock band fills up stadiums with die hard fans, you don’t have much of a choice but to succumb to the rock star life.

He would have continued walking along the academic path if it weren’t for his former romantic partner, Grace Jones, who encouraged him to try making a living as an actor.

Paul Simon may have been the more popular half of the Simon & Garfunkel duo, but when it comes to academics, Art Garfunkel takes the cake. The two met when they were in the six grade and attended junior high and high school together. In college, however, the two went in different directions.

Shutterstock
